This is Orchis pallens, The Pale Orchis. This orchid is found growing in the montane coniferous forest of Spain, France, Germany, Czechloslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland, at altitudes up to 2500m on mainly calcareaous soils, often at woodland edges. The flower produces no nectar but is pollinated by bees who confuse it with the nectar bearing Lathyrus vernus.
The spring flowers give off a fragrance similar to elder flower trees at night which some describe as foul. This I have yet to sample for myself.
