Tipularia discolor a North American woodland terrestrial orchid. It overwinters in leaf , the inflorescence emerging in summer after the single leaf dies off. This shoot grows fairly rapidly then it seems to pause for quite a while in bud. This year the buds sat for a fortnight ( 14 days) before any of them showed signs of opening. Finally the flowers on the inflorescence have all all opened and I'm struggling to see craneflies or even crippled craneflies. The effect looks more like mayflies to me. NB THIS IS NOT AN ORCHID FOR A WET SUBSTRATE.

Nice orchid, Fred! This particular species barely crosses the North Fl. border and is considered one of our native species...I agree with you, no craneflies there, or even houseflies for that matter! ;D Great pics. Thanks for the substrate tip as well! Happy Growing, Brian.
