Hi Jeff, Byblis "Goliath" is a cultivar of mine scheduled for publication in March, 2009. Per several conversations with Jan Schlauer, it could possibly be a naturally occuring hybrid between Byblis filifolia and Byblis aquatica since it shows definitive traits of both species. The pulvinic appendage is something not documented in Byblis. To date, i've only used fire/smoke treatment, since it works very well and produces high rates of germination and very healthy, robust offspring. I do have some gibberelic acid and will probably experiment with that as well. Happy Growing, Brian.

ah OK. can you explain your fire/smoke method ? it is you who makes burn dry sphagnum which releases from smoke or you uses already standard paper soaked “smoke paper” ? have you a good percentage of sucess ? for Stylidium or Levenhookia seeds it is the same method on this Byblis you have seeds , hybride ? a hybrid F1 perhaps or a selectioned cultivar. jeff

Hello Jeff, I build a small, but hot dead grass fire on top of the wet compost and seeds. Immediately after the fire goes out and begins to smolder, i cover with a clear propagating dome and keep covered until the collected smoke is gone... Then, I spray-mist the ashes and leftovers into the soil. I've had great germination rates using this method. Have you successfully used this method on your Stylidium?
For now, I'm only going to achieve cultivar status for Byblis "Goliath". Jan suggested it would take a trip to Australia to do field studies, in order to name it as a proper hybrid. Some day, I hope to go there....but it would be in the very distant future! ;D
Happy Growing, Brian.

stylidium and levenhookia seeds use the bush fire to germinate .
for mine, I use a sorte of blotting paper impregnated to smoke ( it is more easy ;D ) but I know that some one use your method with dry sphagnum.
This byblis 'Goliath' is your baby , or others people have ? know you if byblis is selffecond ?

Hi Jeff, As far as I know, Byblis "Goliath" is the only one of it's kind thus far, after conversations with Jan Schlauer, Barry Rice, Bob Ziemer and other growers. I carefully researched it before applying for cultivar status. So I guess it's my "baby" ;D I will be offering rooted cuttings next year... I look forward to some Stylidium seed in a trade soon, when my Pinguicula set seed. P. planifolia is already showing spikes!
Happy Growing, Brian.
