This is Himantoglossum robertiana ( formerly Barlia robertiana ) a terrestrial orchid from the Meditteranean area. The white' clone began opening its scented flowers on the 6th January, and it's still flowering now ( March 7th) with more buds still to open. No heat is provided and the greenhouse vents are fully open all year. The species is considered only half hardy but my experience now shows they are hardy to at least -6C. (21F) It is one of the larger terrestrials and the inflorescences should eventually reach 90cm (3ft), unfortunately not this year. Flower colour is variable as demonstrated in these two clones. The scent in the greenhouse on a sunny day is strong and very pleasing.
