Hey Guys, I sprouted two of my Byblis filifolia seeds and they are currently approaching the 20cm mark! Allen Lowrie said they should reach 60cm! I'm going to need a taller lowland terrarium ;D, any thoughts on how they would do in highland conditions? -Max

Hey Max,
My B. 'Goliath' grows best in slightly cooler conditions and full sun, usually with highs of 80F and lows of 65F. They also seem to like it a little wet, but not sopping wet...almost damp at all times.
Yours are looking pretty good! Are you growing under lights?
Brian.

Hey Brian,
I moved it out to the greenhouse today and I am slowly acclimating it to full sun.
Yep, they are grown under lights, for now at least, once I finish my hot-house I will be using only the sun.

Hey Max, Wonderful! It looks like you're keeping it a bit drier...and it's loving it. However, don't keep it too dry or all flowers will wilt and abort. Your soil mix looks near perfect as well.....great job. I do believe that what you may have is Byblis 'Goliath' [filifolia] or should I say Byblis spec. Goliath... You should be able to turn that plant into at least three or four rooted cuttings. Also, when your second plant depicted flowers, you should be able to cross-pollinate and get TONS of seed. I'll be happy to instruct you on doing so, step-by-step when the time comes... Good Job! Brian.

Hey Brian,
Thanks for the info! The second plant is about to open its first flower so pollination instructions would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Max

Hey Max, Good! Here's what to do... Let the new flower open for two days first, so that the stigma will be receptive. Then, the afternoon of the third day, choose a few anthers and remove them from your other plant's flowers. Choose the ones that have a fluffy "pillowy" look, as these will have good ripe pollen. Now, carefully split the anther with a sharp razor blade (be careful!) Paper plates make great workplates to do this on.. Grab one half of an anther with tweezers and locate the split side. Now gently dab the split side onto the stigma with a very slight downward motion, and with a magnifying glass check the stigma afterwards. All you need is several grains of pollen adhered to the stigma to do the trick, but I do like to coat mine well. Then, reverse/repeat the process from the new flower, to the older ones on the other plant. Presto! You should see the pulvinus form at the pedicel junction and the capsule begin it's lowering within three days. Let me know how it goes... Happy Growing, Brian.
