Hello, here are a few pictures from some of my D. ascendens plants. In my opinion this is the species that differs most depending from where it comes from. Here, have a look: D. ascendens ´Bandeira Peak´ it´s not very hairy D. ascendens ´Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil´ it´s really very hairy and very big, about 10cm in diameter, it´s forming a stem and who wonders, it´s my favorite D. ascendens ´Sao Bernardo do Campo, Caminho do Mar, Sao Paulo, Brazil´ very hairy and deep purple plants D. ascendens ´Salesopolis, E Sao Paolo State, SE Brazil´ plants are more green/yellow and slightly hairy D. ascendens ´Serra de Ponta Grossa, Campo Largo-PR-Brazil´ young plants, slightly hairy, but it has more narrow leafes than the others Additionally i´m growing plants from ´Itarare, Sao Paulo, Brazil´, ´Rio das Pombas´ and ´Paranapiacaba, Santo André, Sao Paulo state, Brazil´ that are also looking slightly different. They differ in other points as well. Some are flowering very often (Bandeira Peak), some of them have not flowered at all, nethertheless they are the oldest plants (Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil), from some of them leafcuttings are working good, from some of them they don´t work at all (Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil/´Sao Bernardo do Campo, Caminho do Mar, Sao Paulo, Brazil´). And another difference, the form from ´Itarare, Sao Paulo, Brazil´ is often dying and than it recovers again from the substrate. The other forms don´t behave this way under my conditions. Best regards, Dani

Very nice Drosera specimens, Dani! I agree, that it seems that you have different forms of the mentioned species. Interestingly, it also sounds like your Drosera ascendens ´Itarare, Sao Paulo, Brazil´ form experiences some sort of dormancy. Here is an article that you may find quite interesting; www.amjbot.org/cgi/content/full/90/1/123Any ideas on what may trigger it? Is it a higher altitude variety? Happy Growing, Brian.

Thanks Max and Brian. thanks for the link, very interesting to read. In my eyes it looks like a form of dormacy too, a few other Drosera species from south America are going into dormacy. The form from ´Itatare´ is looking very similar to the form from Bandeira Peak, it´s not very hairy and it has more narrow leafes. I don´t know what triggers it (same growing conditions for all of them), but so far as i know the more hairy forms are from higher altitude (for example the form from ´Serra dos Órgãos´). Best regards, Dani
